Which FINGER-SCREEN™ is Right for Your Operation?

 by Jack McLellan,

Your recycling operation deserves equipment that is efficient, reliable, and durable. The FINGER-SCREEN™ is known as The Heart of your Sorting System for good reason: a FINGER-SCREEN™ optimized for your specific operation can handle material separation challenges, minimize downtime, and hit your processing goals– increasing your overall profitability.

As the heart of recycling facilities worldwide, the General Kinematics FINGER-SCREEN™ family has evolved to meet the recycling industry’s demands. Each model addresses different material and process challenges. Here’s a quick breakdown of major features, differences, and applications for each member of GK’s FINGER-SCREEN™ family so you can make the right choice for your material recovery facility.

Original FINGER-SCREEN™: Proven Performance and Reliability

For more than six decades, the original GK FINGER-SCREEN™ has set the standard for Primary and Secondary screening of C&D and other waste materials. The core advantage of the original FINGER-SCREEN™ is its rugged, self-relieving deck design, which drastically reduces jams and clogs that typically plague other screening equipment like wire mesh screens and Rotary Trommel screens. It ensures consistent material stratification and separation, significantly boosting throughput and operational reliability.

The original FINGER-SCREEN™ is highly versatile, reliably separating a wide array of materials, including municipal solid waste (MSW), C&D debris, biomass, and more. When you need a durable, reliable screening solution, the original FINGER-SCREEN™ will increase productivity and reduce costs.

FINGER-SCREEN™ Velocity: For Difficult Materials

The FINGER-SCREEN™ Velocity is engineered for mixed waste streams that contain high moisture content and challenging, hard-to-separate materials. Utilizing a high-energy vibratory drive, the Velocity breaks apart tangled or elastic materials more effectively. Initial size separation removes potentially destructive contaminants when used as a primary screen, allowing for more effective downstream operation.

Designed to be adaptable, the Velocity’s advanced configuration promotes efficient stratification even under heavy load conditions, significantly reducing slowdowns often caused by tangled plastics, wet organics, or dense aggregates. Its unique design offers enhanced reliability. It requires less frequent cleaning and maintenance, dramatically decreasing operational bottlenecks and enhancing overall system productivity. Operators who have integrated Velocity screens into their processing lines report significant material purity and throughput improvements, simplifying downstream processes and reducing overall processing costs.

FINGER-SCREEN FreeFlow™: The Best of Both Worlds

GK’s latest development to their screening solutions, the FINGER-SCREEN FreeFlow™, combines features of both the original and the Velocity models. It differentiates itself from the other models by removing the bottom pan from beneath the finger deck. It positions the drive components externally, creating an entirely unobstructed screening surface both above and below.

The unobstructed screening surface eliminates common maintenance & operational issues like frequent cleanings, blockage from damp or high-moisture waste, and buildup of compacted materials. Screened material passes smoothly and continuously through the Finger Deck, substantially reducing downtime and maximizing operational efficiency. A bunker or separate belt conveyor below the screening surface can take fines/unders in either direction for more options in system arrangements or retro-fits.

Unlike other screening equipment without a bottom pan, the FINGER-SCREEN FreeFlow™ can be used as a Primary or Secondary screen in different waste streams.

Why Choose the GK FINGER-SCREEN™?

When you choose GK’s FINGER-SCREEN™ equipment, you’re choosing a solution that results from GK’s dedication to solving everyday problems recycling facilities face. GK’s designs prioritize safety and ease of maintenance so your team can focus more on production and less on equipment maintenance and repairs.

Facilities using GK’s FINGER-SCREEN™ technology have reported significant benefits compared to their old screens, including greater material throughput, significantly less downtime, less maintenance costs, and smoother overall operations.

Investing in equipment that delivers superior results is crucial for material recovery operations. Whether you’re sorting standard materials or managing complex mixed waste streams, the FINGER-SCREEN™ family offers a proven solution to enhance throughput, reliability, and profitability.
