Around the holidays is the time that dedicated recyclers kick their recycling habits up a notch. Between the holiday parties and impromptu gift openings, you are almost guaranteed to accrue additional waste over the next month or so. What better time to share the gift of recycling with your friends in the office?

Fortunately, recycling in the workplace during the holidays is easy with a little bit of planning and communication. Here are some tips and tricks for having an enjoyable holiday season while keeping an eye on environmentally-friendly practices.

Use Tech Whenever Possible

Having an office holiday party? Sending Christmas cards to clients? This year, try sending your correspondence by email. Evites help to eliminate excess waste, and your employees and customers will appreciate the effort. As an added bonus, most electronic correspondence can be easily searched by name or address and RSVP’s can be automatically tracked and logged.

Work in a warehouse? Consider investing in a cardboard crusher. Do you already work for a recycling or sorting center? Consider upgrading your equipment to more efficient machinery. There are lots of ways to make your recycling efforts easier and more impactful.

Decorate with Recyclables

Looking for a unique way to decorate the office tree? Why not organize a contest for employees in which they can use only found items to craft their contribution. It’s a fun way to include everyone in your office while also inspiring conservation. The paper and cardboard in your office recycling bin can easily be repurposed for some festive, silly, fun holiday decorations. Cutting old memos into snowflakes, for example, can be a great way to breathe new life into your cast aside paper.Once the holidays are over, just pop all of your newly made decorations in the recycling bin.

You’ll benefit from the fact that:

  • You won’t need to find room to store decorations until next year; you can just create new ones when the holidays roll around again
  • You’ll be contributing less waste headed for landfills
  • And, you’re office will never look boring during the holidays because you’ll always have new decorations each year.

Extend Your Efforts Throughout the Year

The best way to practice good recycling habits during the holidays is to make sure that your office is recycling throughout the year. If you’re new to an inter-office recycling effort, then make this holiday season an opportunity to kick-start a year-round recycling program. Take steps to partner with a local recycling facility and discuss methods that will help with collecting, sorting and managing all the different recyclables in your office.

You might also consider starting a local community recycling program. This can be small or large scale and can even include contacting your city’s government officials to work directly with collections and sorting facilities. Start a traditional electronics take-back day or donate to a local charitable organization that recycles vehicles. There are plenty of ways to get involved and stay involved all year!
