Buried Treasure: Everyday Treasure Hunting in the US

 by General Kinematics,

Throughout the world, amateur adventurers and enterprising hikers have been scouring historical hot spots and geological wonders to find treasures of every kind. Whether it’s leftover gifts from Mother Nature like unclaimed gold or lost pennies on the beach, there is treasure just waiting to be discovered.

If you’re interested in taking advantage of our nation’s incredible hidden mineral wealth, here are some locations and information on some of America’s most impressive treasure hunting locations.

Cove Treasure Hunt

This gorgeous cove in Big Sur, California has an abundance naturally occurring jade. Treasure hunters can comb the beach or even dive the shallow water looking for the green, brown and lavender colored mineral. And, even if you come up empty-handed, there’s still the beauty of Big Sur to enjoy.

Find Free Diamonds in Arkansas

Appropriately enough, the Natural State is home to the Crater of Diamonds State Park, the world’s only diamond-producing site that’s open to the public. Not only is there the possibility of finding something valuable, but Crater of Diamonds State Park also has a bunch of family-friendly activities around which to plan an entire vacation.

There’s Gold Where?

The hills located in Pine Grove, California, to be exact. This is where a historically accurate gold panning operation allows visitors the opportunity to relive the glory days of the 1849 California gold rush. However, this fun activity is popular all over the US thanks to its relatively cheap cost, simple process and potential monetary yield.

Mine For Sunstone in Southeast Oregon

The official state gem of Oregon, sunstone, is a shimmering jewel that visitors to Spectrum Sunstone Mine in Plush, Oregon can find in local lava tubes. Given its unique look from the infusion of copper in the mineral, Oregon Sunstones can vary in color from yellow, red, green and blue and can be up to 3 inches wide.

Look for Gems at Emerald Hollow Mine

A variety of gems can be found in North Carolina’s Emerald Hollow Mine. Five dollars will get you a bucket of your own to search for gems; a hundred dollars will get you a bucket with directions for some guaranteed treasure finds.
